3.0 NAMIBIA: THE MINING CONTEXT

2016 (Chamber of Mines Namibia, 2016). Once the Husab mine reaches full production, Namibia is expected to become the world's second-largest producer of uranium oxide (CIA, 2018). Rössing Uranium, which is majority owned by Rio Tinto, is the country's longest-running open pit uranium mine, having been in operation since 1976.

It is located close to the town of Arandis 70 kilometers inland from the coastal town of Swakopmund in the Namib Desert in the Erongo Region in Namibia.
